Investing in Natural Food Stocks

The movement towards organic food wasn't really absorbed into the mainstream until the last decade or so as natural food companies incorporated and expanded. The popular Whole Foods Market (WFM) was founded in 1980, went public in 1992, and grew aggressively in the 2000's. Annie's (BNNY), maker of bunny-shaped snacks and more, took its shares public in 2011. Since then, BNNY has seen a tremendous rise in its IPO stock price mirroring the continued growth of the natural foods industry.

Americans are not internationally known for healthy or ethical eating habits. However, popular publications like Michael Pollan's The Omnivore's Dilemma and repeated health scares (e. coli appearing in spinach, eggs, horse meat and pink slime scandals) are making us more self-conscious than ever about what we put in our bodies. Fast food outlets are racing to keep pace with more sustainable lifestyles.
